Ponniyin Selvan has been considered for film adaptation by various Tamil directors since its publication, including an attempt by M. G. Ramachandran in the late 1950s. However, it never materialized due to financial restrictions. Ratnam tried to make a movie out of the book again in the late 1980s and early 2010s, but he failed. Ratnam resurrected the idea in January 2019, calling it his “dream project,” after Lyca agreed to fund it. The Ponniyin Selvan production began in December 2019 and ended in September 2021, after multiple changes in cast and staff. It was halted twice because of the COVID-19 epidemic. The film was shot in India and Thailand, with a few sequences in both. It was supposed to be a single film, but it was divided into two parts.
